WASHINGTON. - Army officials say they appear to be getting a handle on the problem, but they also admit that suicides among soldiers this year will likely top last year's pace. Army Vice Chief of Staff General Peter Chiarelli said today the 140 confirmed suicides by soldiers this year is equal to last year's total. However Chiarelli says the pace of those deaths has tapered off in recent months following a surge in January and February. More>>

SPOKANE, Wash. - According the Department of Defense, a Spokane soldier was killed in Afghanistan in a helicopter crash there Monday. A total of seven U.S. Army Soldiers died in the crash, including 40-year-old Chief Warrant Officer Niall Lyons of Spokane. Also killed in the crash was 36-year-old Chief Warrant Officer Michael P. Montgomery of Savannah, Ga. KOMO-TV reports he is a native of Redmond.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Governor Chris Gregoire directed today that flags at all Washington state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff Wednesday, July 1, in memory of U.S. Army 1st Lt. Brian N. Bradshaw, 24, of Steilacoom, who died on June 25 in Kheyl, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained from the detonation of an improvised explosive device. More>>
IRAQ. - A Washington National Guard soldier from Port Orchard is dead of injuries suffered in a non-combat-related vehicle rollover. The Defense Department announced 20-year-old Pfc. Samuel Stone died May 30 in Tallil, Iraq. Stone's death came about a month before his unit was set to begin returning home. Stone was assigned to 1st Squadron, 303rd Cavalry Regiment, a unit of the 81st Brigade Combat Team. It's the first death the brigade has suffered since deploying to Iraq. More>>
FORT DRUM, N.Y.- Four Fort Drum aviators were killed January 26, including one airman from Colville, Washington. The crash in northern Iraq involved two OH-58D Kiowa helicopters. According to the Department of Defense, the cause of the crash is unclear right now, but it does not appear to have been caused by enemy action. An investigation is ongoing. More>>
