WASHINGTON (AP) - Transportation and labor officials said some airline pilots would fly fewer hours and others more hours under a proposal being released Friday to help lessen pilot fatigue. RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A federal judge in Southern California has declared the U.S. military's ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips on Thursday granted a request for an injunction halting the government's "don't ask, don't tell" policy for gays in the military. Phillips says the policy doesn't help military readiness and instead has a "direct and deleterious effect" on the armed services. More>>

Convicted murderer Cal Coburn Brown is scheduled to die by lethal injection early Friday. On Thursday night, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to overturn the ruling of a federal judge in Seattle who declined to block the execution. More>>

SAN BRUNO, Calif. (AP) - A California emergency official says 53 homes have been destroyed and 120 damaged in a massive blast and fire south of San Francisco. At least one person has been killed. California Emergency Management Agency spokesman Jay Allen says the fire in a San Bruno neighborhood had spread to 10 acres Thursday night. Allen says the blaze is 50 percent contained as firefighters battle the flames into the night. More>>
