Fire crews rescue deer from icy Liberty Lake

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - It took Spokane Valley fire crews about 15 minutes to successfully rescue a deer from a frozen Liberty Lake Wednesday morning after the animal fell through the ice.

A 911 call reporting that a deer had fallen through the ice and was stuck came in around 10 a.m. and crews arrived on scene a short time later to find the distraught deer about 85 yards from the shore.

The deer was trying to stand, but appeared to be exhausted and needed help.

With firefighters trained in ice rescue, they donned safety gear and headed out onto the thin ice and were able to reach the young deer and tug it to shore where it sprang to its feet and up the hill.
