    SPOKANE, Wash. -  Var, the Spokane Police dog shot and injured by a car theft suspect March 17, will be awarded a Purple Heart at the Spokane City Council meeting Monday night. Var's handler returned fire killing the suspect. Var had been brought out of retirement to fill a void in police dogs when he was shot. A police committee decided April 8 to award the medal to Var. Var and his handler, Danny Lesser, will accept the award at the meeting around 6 p.m. >>

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police Officer Glenn Bartlett will be receiving the Silver Star Medal April 29 for his courageous off-duty actions following a fatal car accident.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 19 near Seven Mile Road and North Inland Road.

The collision between a car and truck caused the car to burst into flames which killed the driver of the car.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Bartlett, off-duty at the time, is being credited with attempting to save the life of the person the driving the car that burst into flames.

Barlett is receiving his award the same week Var, the police K-9 is receiving a Purple Heart for injuries sustained from a car theft suspect who shot the animal. Var's handler returned fire killing the suspect, 22-year-old Johnnie Longest.
