SPOKANE, Wash.- Police say the 23-year-old woman missing in the Spokane River since 9 Wednesday night is safe. According to officers, the woman did go into the river, but did not suffer any serious injury and was able to make it to shore by herself.
Just after midnight on Thursday morning, police say the woman called her mother to report she was okay. Search and Recovery crews had been looking for her at People's Park near Riverside and Clark after a male friend told police that the two of them jumped in the river and then he lost sight of her.
Crews spent the next three hours searching for the woman, but finally called off the search when it was determined the light was too poor, the river was running too fast, and the water was too cold to enter. Family and friends continued searching the area after Search and Rescue crews left for the night. Crews planned on returning the next morning.
According to police, minutes later, the woman called her mother to tell her she'd seen police lights and wasn't sure what was going on, but that she was safe. Her mother called police to tell them her daughter was okay.
