LINCOLN COUNTY, Wash. - The National Weather Service says they have received reports of funnel clouds sighted in the area near Creston in Lincoln County after issuing a severe thunderstorm warning for southeastern Lincoln and Spokane Counties Saturday afternoon.
At 2:36 the National Weather Service's Doppler Radar picked up a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter sized hail. The storm was located 8 miles northwest of Sprague and 22 miles west of Cheney. Highway 23 five miles north of Sprague had water covering the roadway due to heavy rain, but the road was able to remain open. The Severe thunderstorm warning lasted about an hour and a half before being canceled.
Two funnel clouds were photographed by several area residents around 3:00 Saturday afternoon during the thunderstorm.
Many people in the area said the funnel clouds were tornadoes touching down, but the National Weather Service says that is not the case.
Meteorologist Jonathan Fox with the National Weather Service in Spokane says what looked like tornadoes, were actually land spouts that circulated up to 6,000 feet. Fox says land spouts are different from dust devils, which only go up about 1,000 feet in the air.
The National Weather Service says there have not been any reports of damage or injuries.
