RITZVILLE, Wash. - One lane of I-90 at the Highway 395 junction near Ritzville was blocked because of a crash involving two semi-trucks which spilled medical supplies all over the road early Tuesday.
The incident began before 4 a.m. when a truck carrying the medical supplies overturned across the highway. A second semi traveling east on I-90 collided with the trailer broadside when it failed to see the previous crash blocking the road.
Washington State Patrol troopers at the scene told KHQ that the two drivers involved suffered only minor injuries.
According to WSP, one of the semis was carrying unused medical syringes and was heading to a pharmacy to deliver them. Those syringes spilled onto the roadway and created what WSP termed a "bio hazard" during their initial response.
Trooper Steve Morehead told KHQ that when investigators determined the nature of the spilled material they changed their approach to the situation and began to clean up the road pushing the spill to the shoulders of the highway. WSP said that cleanup crews could be on scene for the remainder of the day Tuesday to completely clear the road.
