HAYDEN LAKE, Idaho (AP) - Hayden Lake resident Alicia Hopkins says she first started noticing bear scat in her yard. Then she heard stories about black bears spotted nearby.
It turns out the bears have been raiding bird feeders outside homes in the region.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has received fewer than normal calls about bears this year, thanks to a strong huckleberry crop that gave the animals plenty of forage.
But wildlife officials say the bears are still attracted to easy sources of food, and that means people should secure their garbage cans by keeping them in garages when possible, hang bird feeders well out of reach or better yet, take them inside at night.
