NC Idaho sees interest from wind energy companies

Associated Press - October 12, 2009 8:14 AM ET

GRANGEVILLE, Idaho (AP) - Northcentral Idaho leaders say they've been contacted by a pair of wind-energy companies over the past year that are scouting the region for gusty grounds.

Idaho County Commission members says Northwest Renewable Resources of Oregon and French-owned Ridgeline Energy initiated discussions earlier this year, but so far nothing concrete has emerged from talks.

At least 1 of the sites being considered for a wind-turbine installation is near the top of the White Bird grade.

Ridgeline Energy has been active elsewhere in Idaho. For instance, in April, utility Southern California Edison entered a 20-year power purchase agreement from 1 of Ridgeline's wind farms in eastern Idaho.

Idaho County Commissioner Jim Rehder says he thinks the sluggish economy has probably slowed down investment interest in wind energy in northcentral Idaho, but believes the region has promise once lending picks up and demand for new sources of electricity accelerates.
