AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. - A Spokane area family is looking for a new home after fire destroyed their garage and killed 7 dogs in their Dachshund rescue Monday morning.
Margo Mossburg founded Dachshund Rescue Northwest in 1991. She says 16 dogs were saved from the garage and living space. The dogs have been placed in temporary shelters and with friends who have adopted other dogs previously.
"I'm in shock," she said. "Those are some of my babies."
Mossburg suffered smoke inhalation while rescuing some of the animals and she prolonged going to the hospital so she could find homes for the dogs.
"Critters first, us second," she said.
Mossburg said the cause of the fire has been ruled electrical after starting in her garage about 6:30 Monday morning.
She said anyone interested in adopting one of the dogs can complete an application on the Rescue's web site.

"This is pretty devastating," she said. "I don't know how long it will be until I get the dog rescue up and running again."
The rescue is seeking donations including exercise pens and dog crates to replace those destroyed by fire.
