East Spokane pistol-whipping assault turns into shooting

Posted: Updated: Oct 14, 2009 07:11 AM PDT

SPOKANE, Wash. - An attempt to recover a woman's purse turned violent Wednesday morning after what started as a pistol whipping ended with one man being shot in the face.

The incident started earlier in the evening when a woman lost her purse at a party. Two men, Kyle Williamson and Nicholas Sherman, found the purse and called her to meet them at the Tesoro near 2nd and Thor in order to give it back to her.

The woman agreed and showed up at the gas station around 1 a.m. with her boyfriend, 19-year-old Kyle Henrickson.

During the exchange, Henrickson felt his girlfriend was in danger and that the two other men were going to steal her money and attack her.

He got out of his car with a gun and started a fight with Williamson and Sherman. He started pistol-whipping 23-year-old Kyle Williamson when the gun went off, striking Sherman in the face.

Sherman, with a gunshot wound to his jaw, then walked to Deaconess Medical Center and checked himself in for treatment.

At last check, he was in stable condition and is expected to survive. It is not clear if Williamson ever checked into a hospital.

Police say they received information about the Henrickson from his girlfriend and were able to arrest him at a home in the 6500 block of north Walnut.

He's being charged with two felony counts of First Degree Assault, one for the pistol-whipping and another for the shooting.
