According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Roberto Vasquez Robles and a roommate Eduardo Madrigal Sanchez were in the dining room of a single wide mobile home when another roommate, 30 year-old Efrain Vargas Rios entered the room with a shotgun. Madrigal attempted to leave the room and Vargas pointed the shotgun and fired a single blast into the back of Madrigal's legs seriously wounding him. Vargas then turned the shotgun to Vasquez and demanded his money and the keys to Vasquez' vehicle. Vasquez gave him the money he had and the keys to a Dodge Intrepid. Vargas then left the residence in Vasquez' vehicle to whereabouts unknown.
Vargas had only lived with Vasquez and Madrigal for a period of one month. Both men said Vargas was not acting normal the night of the shooting. Madrigal had been transported to an area hospital and later was transferred to a Seattle area hospital for treatment of a single shotgun blast to one of his leg's.
