SEATTLE, Wash. - The Washington state Department of Transportation produced an animation showing how Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct would collapse in the event of a magnitude 7 earthquake.
The video shows the seawall failing and steam lines rupturing as parts of the elevated highway fall down.
Saturday, Gov. Chris Gregoire and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels signed an agreement to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a deep-bore tunnel.
Some protesters gathered, holding signs that said "No Big Dig."
Nickels said there are some things worth losing an election over, and the tunnel is one of them. Nickels is wrapping up his last term as mayor after he failed to survive the primary in his re-election bid.
The city council approved the agreement Monday that outlines how the city and state will work together to replace the elevated section of Highway 99 along the downtown waterfront.
