SPOKANE, Wash. - Members of the Spokane Police Honor Guard left Spokane Thursday morning to attend Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton's memorial service.

Brenton, 39 and 33-year-old rookie officer Britt Sweeney were parked in downtown Seattle when their police cruiser was struck several times by gunfire shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday.

Brenton died instantly. Sweeney ducked and a bullet grazed her back. She then called for help and returned fire.

Brenton was Seattle's first officer killed in the line of duty since 2006.

Sgt. Jon Anderson, Cpl. David Beckley, Officer Wayne Downing, Officer Shaney Redmon of the Spokane Police Department as well as Chief Kirkpatrick will be attending Friday's service.

Brenton's funeral will be held a 1 p.m. Friday at the KeyArena. More than 1,000 cars are expected to take part in a procession that leaves at 9 a.m. from the University of Washington on a route through the city.

Meanwhile, a Seattle police honor guard has raised a flag on the Space Needle to honor Brenton.

The flag, raised Thursday, shows a police badge with a black band through the middle and Brenton's badge number of 6699.
