SPOKANE, Wash. - A man has been arrested after the vehicle he was driving hit a woman crossing the street in downtown Spokane Friday night.
Police say the woman was crossing the intersection of Spokane Falls Blvd. and Browne St. around 10:30 Friday, when she was hit by the vehicle and thrown several feet. The male driver then backed the car up and drove around the woman fleeing the scene.
A witness followed the vehicle and called police telling them its location.
The driver and his female passenger ditched their vehicle and the Spokane County Air One helicopter and a K-9 unit were brought in to aide in the search.
Police located the suspects near Sprague and Hatch. The suspect driver, 29-year-old Cameron B. Olsness from Spokane was arrested and booked upon vehicular assault and felony hit and run charges.
Olsness sustained a gash to his leg as a result of jumping a fence and the passenger had reportedly sustained a possible broken leg.
Police say the woman who was hit was unconscious upon arrival and sustained what appeared to be life threatening injuries. She appeared to be approximately 50-years-old, suffered head injuries as a result of the collision, and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Police were not able to give an update on the woman's condition when contacted on Sunday.
