Two families displaced by house fire a day before Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Just a day before Thanksgiving two families are without a home after a fire at their shared duplex made the home unsafe to stay in.

The fire broke out around midnight Wednesday morning at 1218 E. Queen Avenue. Fire crews on scene say the downstairs family was cooking something on the stove when the pan they were using caught fire.

They tried to put the fire out with a blanket, but that just made the fire spread and it eventually destroyed that downstairs kitchen and spread into the ceiling and because of that, fire crews had to pull down part of the ceiling and damaged the floor of the upstairs unit.

The damage from the fire and the fire extinguishing efforts have made neither unit habitable and forced both families to find alternate living arrangements.

The three adults living in the downstairs unit were put up in a hotel with assistance from Red Cross. The two adults and child living upstairs were able to find either friends or family to stay with.

It's not clear when, or if, they'll be able to move back into the duplex.
