Police: Don’t leave your cars unattended... or your snow plow

Posted:

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Police are asking for the public's help to curb an unusual crime - theft of snow plows.

City officials say they have seen a spike in the number of reports taken for snow plows and blades being stolen from driveways across Spokane.

Police officers say at least one person detached plow blades from the front of trucks after last weekend's snow. The blades can weigh more than 100 pounds, according to police.

Officer Glenn Bartlett called the type of theft "unusual" and said it is not an annual occurrence.

One person has been arrested, but authorities suspect others could also be responsible.

Police find themselves in the unusual position of asking the public to protect snow plows by parking them inside or in areas where they are not easily accessible.

At least one business in East Spokane was burglarized earlier this month when someone stole a plow blade from a store. The store owner speculated the economy was prompting someone to steal the plow blades in hopes of starting a company for extra money.

Officer Bartlett encourages snowplow owners to write down their blade's serial number so authorities can return stolen merchandise if it is recovered.
