Huskies win Apple Cup 30-0 over battered Cougars

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Cougars were unable to win the 2009 Apple Cup when they fell to the Huskies 30-0 Saturday.

Jake Locker threw for 196 yards and a touchdown and ran for another 94 yards and a score, and Washington posted its first shutout of rival Washington State in 45 years with the score of 30-0.

Washington stopped a two-game losing streak to the Cougars and beat Washington State at home for the first time since 2003.

The Huskies did it with a battering defense that knocked out Washington State quarterbacks on three different occasions and an offense that wore down the Cougars by dominating the second half on the ground

Starter Kevin Lopina left Saturday's game against Washington after he was intercepted on his seventh pass. He appeared to hurt his right shoulder when Washington's Darrion Jones hit him.

Marshall Lobbestael then entered and nine passes later, he tried to run over Washington's Jason Wells on a downfield scramble. He stumbled trying to get up and was helped to the bench by two trainers.

Lobbestael re-entered, then was driven hard into the turf by UW's Cameron Elisara.  He landed violently on his shoulder and was eventually carted off the field.

With freshman Jeff Tuel's right knee still sprained, redshirt sophomore Dan Wagner finished the half.
