Kalama, Wash. runs out of water

Associated Press - December 14, 2009 11:55 PM ET

KALAMA, Wash. (AP) - The city of Kalama, Wash., ran dry early Monday after a water main ruptured, draining the municipal reservoir. That left most residents without water for several hours and shut down schools and some businesses.

Crews managed to restore water to about half the 2,500 affected customers by midmorning and Public Works Director Carl McCrary said most had water by late Monday afternoon.

School Superintendent Jim Sutton says schools will remain closed while health officials confirm the restored water supply is safe.

McCrary says he thinks the water main froze and cracked Sunday night but officials didn't learn about the depleted reservoir for several hours. And then public works crews and firefighters had to hunt to find exactly where the break was.
