Central Valley School District take public opinion on budget cuts

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash.- The Central Valley School District is asking for your input on where they should make budget cuts, and KHQ has learned more about what options are on the table.  The Central Valley School District is looking at ways to cut anywhere from $2 million to $3.3 million from the next school year's budgets, knowing that more cuts will be on the way the following year.

The district is looking at basically a laundry list of options, trying to find ways to make cuts that will have the least impact on students and staff. Here are a few of the options they're considering:

  • Eliminate the contracted sheriff's deputies who patrol Central Valley and University High Schools and handle drug, weapons and gang-related issues
  • Eliminate two safety resource officers that deal with bullying and harassment issues
  • Increase school lunch prices
  • Eliminate school breakfast programs
  • Cutting the number of bus stops, which means students would have to walk farther to get to the bus

Staffing and teaching positions are the other big thing when it comes to budget cuts. The number of employees the district could lose is hovering right around 20, about 10 teachers, 7 administrators, as well as librarians, nurses and counselors.

There are two scheduled public meetings to discuss the possible cuts all from 7:00-8:45pm

  • March 24 Horizon Middle School, 3915 S. Pines Road
  • March 25 Central Valley High School, 821 S. Sullivan Road
