KHQ.COM EXCLUSIVE; Spokane County Jail; Going For The Throat? You Decide

Posted: Updated: May 25, 2010 04:09 PM PDT

SPOKANE, Wash. - Did a Spokane County Detention Deputy insert himself in a situation that ended with an inmate being choked? Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says yes.

Deputy Wayne Green told KHQ Reporter Bill McGinty that the inmate was presenting a threat and ignoring verbal commands. Deputy Green says while it appears he did "go for the throat", he didn't. The video of the incident was captured on a camera inside the Spokane County Jail booking area. Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says the video tells the whole story of a deputy that lost his cool while the deputy says the video doesn't have any audio and is too blurry to give people an accurate account of what happened that day.

The case was investigated after a fellow deputy filed a report saying that Deputy Green's use of force was "unnecessary".

Deputy Green was investigated and then terminated from the Sheriffs Office and he is currently going through arbitration to get his job back because he said he was terminated too quickly.

When we asked the Sheriff if he wanted Deputy Green back on his staff, he said, "If I wanted him back I would have never fired him."
