Should Costco Be Allowed to Sell Liquor?

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash.- The debate over who should be allowed to sell liquor in Washington continues and now a major retailer is taking sides. Bulk retailer Costco wants to be able to sell liquor at discounted prices. Some say this could just create a bigger problem for law enforcement.

Many law enforcement officers agree that alcohol often contributes to crime, so it follows that the last thing they might need is for people to be able to get alcohol at a cheaper price. But economists point out that opening up liquor sales to all businesses could help the economy.

Starting next week, Costco will set up tables at all of its stores in Washington asking shoppers to sign initiative 11-hundred. They need 242-thousand signatures to get the measure on the November ballot.

If it works, voters would be allowed to decide whether to take liquor sales out of the state's hands.

  • It would allow stores that now sell beer and wine to also sell hard liquor.
  • It would eliminate price controls and allow bulk discounts.
  • Retailers could also buy liquor directly from manufacturers.

In other states that allow all businesses to sell liquor, statistics show that the sale of hard alcohol has helped small businesses survive. But others point out that it will become harder to police the sale of liquor to minors if more businesses enter the market.
