POST FALLS, Idaho- Four people were involved in a small plane crash Sunday night on the westbound lanes of I-90 between Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene. It happened just before 10:30 Sunday night.
KHQ photojournalist Mike Perry was able to speak with several people inside the plane. According to the pilot, the four were flying over Lake Coeur d'Alene to watch the Fourth of July Fireworks Show at the Lake. Toward the end of the fireworks show, the plane lost power and the pilot was forced to make an emergency decision.
The pilot angled the plane back toward Spokane and looked for a safe place to make an emergency landing. Because the fireworks show was still ongoing, Interstate 90 was relatively clear. So the pilot brought the plane down in the westbound lanes of I-90.
The pilot made a safe landing at milepost 11 on I-90, and no one on board the plane was injured. There was one car on I-90 that the plane landed in front of, but the driver was able to slow down enough to avoid hitting the plane. That driver then waited for authorities to show up to describe the crash. No serious injuries were involved in this crash.
The plane will remain on I-90 throughout Sunday night. Authorities tell us it will be pushed away from the freeway into the median and will be removed Monday morning.
