Man Killed By Spokane Police In Hillyard; Candlelight Vigil On Tuesday Night

UPDATE: A candlelight vigil for 34-year-old Jeremy Groom will take place Tuesday night at the Special K Bar in Hillyard at 9:30. We're told any and everyone is invited to attend.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: Investigation into Saturday night's officer-involved shooting at the Special K Bar and Grill continued Monday.  An autopsy was conducted Monday morning by the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office.

The incident began at 9:33 p.m. Saturday when a woman called 911 and said that the suspect was inside the bar with a gun.

Officers began responding to the bar and while still on the way, learned that the suspect had threatened to shoot himself. The incident was broadcast to sheriff's patrol units and deputies began responding as well.

While still on the way, responding officers were advised that the complainant's husband had gone outside with the suspect to "talk him down." However, a second caller to 911 reported seeing two men in the parking lot pushing and shoving each other.

As officers arrived in the area and began walking into the scene, dispatchers advised them that the suspect had pointed a gun at a man's head, but that the location of the gun was now unknown.

At 9:38 p.m., officers reported that shots had been fired and requested paramedics to the tavern. The suspect had been shot by officers after they saw him threatening a second man with a pistol. Those officers performed CPR, but the suspect died at the scene.

The suspect's pistol was found near to the body in the tavern parking lot.

The Critical Incident Protocol was invoked and Investigative Response Teams comprised of Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Spokane Police Department and Washington State Patrol detectives were called to the scene.

Identities of the two officers involved in the shooting were not released Monday, but one is a 37-year-old officer with 10 years experience with the SPD. The other is a 26-year-old officer with two years experience.  Both remain on administrative leave. The sheriff's office has the lead in the investigation.

Coverage criticism leads to new conversation about homelessness in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - This story originated as a post to KHQ, from a viewer, upset about this homeless camp below Kendall Yards. After the initial report on Facebook, I got a lot of comments -  many people were offended about how i described the camp. One person who was very vocal, was Ellie. I asked if she would meet with me - and she said yes. As upset as she is with our coverage - she welcomed the chance to make others understand that this is a conversation

SPOKANE, Wash. - "He was my youngest, he was my baby bear," Tina Myer said about her son that was killed by a distracted driver. It was a distracted driver that killed Tina Myer's son Cody, hitting the 23-year-old as he was working as a flagger at a construction site in December 2015. He suffered severe injuries, and died several months later. Now Myer is joining Governor Inslee, praising a new DUI-E law.
