OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: Two sheriff's deputies were slightly injured about 7:15 p.m. Sunday in a crash that left their patrol car a total loss.

Deputy Chuck Sciortino and Reserve Deputy Kathleen Hurst were both transported to a local hospital to be treated for back and neck pain, then driven home.

Sciortino was driving the two to a "threats" call and they were westbound on Francis approaching Freya. Clifford Berry, 63, was eastbound on Francis in a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup pulling a trailer full of household goods.

Sheriff's Traffic Investigator Jason Petrini said Berry moved into the left-turn lane at Freya, and on a solid green light, turned north into the path of the approaching patrol car. The patrol car hit the pickup with its left front and then slid around and hit it a second time with the left rear.

Petrini said Berry appeared to have violated the solid green light which allows left turns after oncoming traffic has cleared the intersection. No citations were issued Sunday night.

The 2010 Crown Victoria patrol car had been in service about a month and sustained $21,000 in damage, enough to consider it a total loss. No damage estimate was available for Berry's truck.
