CURLEW, Wash. - U.S. Border Patrol agents on the Canadian border at Curlew seized more than 136 pounds of cocaine and arrested a Canadian citizen attempting to smuggle the packages across the border.
An agent on patrol spotted a person driving a car down a desolate road near Chesaw, Washington. Following the tracks in the snow, the agent followed the vehicle to a house, where he found footprints leading to some bushes off the driveway. There, he found two people lying down with large backpacks next to them.
As the agent secured one of the suspects, the other took off running towards the Canadian border.
A Border Patrol Canine team was brought in, and the dog immediately detected drugs in the backpacks. The cocaine was "meticulously" packed in 29 separate sealed plastic bags. Border Patrol said the Spokane Sector has seized more than 2,000 pounds of drugs, representing a street value of $18 million.
