Southwest Airlines flight slides off runway

SPOKANE, Wash. - The runway system was temporarily closed at Spokane International Airport Sunday after an inbound flight lost traction and began sliding after a landing.

Around half a dozen flights are impacted by the closure which is expected to last until 4 p.m.

118 passenger were aboard Southwest Airlines Flight 485, which originated in Albuquerque then traveled through Portland before landing in Spokane.

Passengers aboard the 737 say the landing felt normal when they suddenly felt the tires slipping, and plane seemed to spin 90 degrees.

Southwest used three buses to shuttle the plane's passengers and
five crew members to the terminal.

The aircraft will be removed from service for routine inspection to make sure it wasn't damaged and that mechanical failure did not play a role in the incident, King said. Several airport lights were damaged in the incident, Woodard said.

An initial inspection of the plane didn't reveal any immediate damage, but Southwest suspended its operations in Spokane for the rest of the night, King said.

No damage was reported to the aircraft, and no injuries were reported.

An airport spokesman says the last time an incident like this occured was three years ago, when a Horizon flight slid on the runway.
