Decision 2008: Washington State Caucus Day

Posted: Updated:
E. WASH. - Thousands turned out as Precinct Caucuses for the Democratic and Republican Parties were held Saturday at various locations throughout the area. The Spokane Democratic Chair reported seeing double the number of usual voter turn out some precincts, even triple in some places such as the 4th Legislative District.

Spokane Republican Caucus Results: With 90% of the precincts reporting - Ron Paul 46%, Mike Huckabee 20%, John Mccain 15%, Mitt Romney 9%, Uncommitted 10%.

Spokane Democratic Caucus Results: With 98% precincts reporting - Obama 62%, Clinton 35%

WA State Republican Caucus Results: With 93.3% precincts reporting - Huckabee 23.8%, McCain 25.4%, Paul 20.7%, Romney 16.7%, Other 1%, Uncommitted 12.3%

WA State Democratic Caucus Results: Barack Obama has won the Washington State Democratic Caucus with roughly two-thirds of the vote.

Washington Republican and Democratic chairmen say the personal visits by the top three presidential hopefuls should send caucus attendance soaring, as partisans gather in hundreds of community meetings at 1 p.m.

Democrats will allocate all 78 of their elected national delegates through the process. Republicans will use results to allot about half of their 37 elected delegates.

The state also has a presidential primary, conducted mostly via mail, on Feb. 19. Republicans will use results to elect half of their national delegates, but Democrats view the primary as a
nonbinding popularity contest and won't use it to allocate delegates.
