Five mile Rosauer's loses 35 percent of roof

Posted: Updated: Dec 30, 2008 03:40 PM PST

SPOKANE, Wash. - Around 4:45 Monday afternoon roughly 35 percent of the roof at the Five Mile Rosauer's Supermarket collapsed. All employees and customers were evacuated safely from the store prior to the collapse and only one employee suffered minor injuries.

Rosauer's officials sat the quick actions of the store team were instrumental in the safe evacuation of the store.

"The safety of our employees and customers was paramount during the initial moments of the collapse.  We were fortunate to have had some warning prior to the roof giving way and were able to account for all customers and employees who were in the store at the time.  We now turn our attention to working with city officials to assess the damages and determine a timeframe for reconstruction of the roof and a reopening of the store", said Jeff Philipps, President of Rosauer's Supermarkets, Inc.

For those Pharmacy customers impacted by the store closure, prescription files have been transferred to Rosauer's at the North Division "Y".  Customers can call (509) 467-6806 for their prescriptions.

"One of our other immediate goals is to relocate as many employees as possible to other Rosauer's locations to fill needs at those stores", Philipps stated.

Three other Company locations in Spokane at 14th & Lincoln, 29th Avenue, and the Super I store on 29th & Grand Avenue, as well as the Deer Park store, were temporarily closed Tuesday, December 30 while heavy snow was being removed from the roof structures.  Those stores will reopen at 5am on Wednesday, December 31.

"We want to thank the Spokane Fire Department and other city officials for their quick response to the situation and their cooperation in assuring the safety of all involved", commented Philipps.  "With their help we expect to be back in business at our 5-mile location as soon as possible."
