SPOKANE, Wash. - Frustrated by the continued distraction of cell phone texting and calling, a Spokane area school has invested in a device to block the phones from working.
Mt. Spokane spent less than $100 to buy a cell phone jammer online and just completed a 3 day test period designed to foil students who text during class.
"We just thought it was something we wanted to evaluate," said Principal John Hook.
The Mead School District is working with the FCC to clarify whether the device is legal before using it again.
The jamming device was turned on during class time and turned off during passing periods and lunch hour.
"We believe that there are times during the school day that parents need to have access to students and students need to have access to family members, and doctors and things like that," said Hook.
But class time isn't one of them. Student policy dictates that students are allowed to have cell phones if they are turned off during class and stored out of sight; but not everyone complied.
If the device is ruled illegal, the school plans to return it and ask for a refund.
