  • 9 Americans Killed In Afghanistan

    Kabul, Afghanistan - Nine U.S. service members in southern Afghanistan perished in a helicopter crash in what is now the deadliest year for coalition and U.S. forces since the battle against the Taliban started nearly nine years ago. The crash occurred in the Chopan district of Zabul province, one of the several turbulent southern regions where coalition and Afghan troops have been battling the tenacious militant group for years.
  • Deputy's Bullet Lands In Neighboring Lewiston Hotel Room

    LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) - Police say an off-duty Bonner County sheriff's deputy fired his weapon in a Lewiston hotel room. Lewiston Police Cpl. Joedy Mundell says the bullet from the semiautomatic pistol went through the deputy's room and into the occupied room next door on Monday night.

    SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Fire Department was stretched thin after 2 house fires at the same time this afternoon drained resources that are only going to get thinner with more budget cuts on the way.

    MARTINEZ, Calif. - A Northern California man is on trial for allegedly strangling a retiree and setting his Bay Point town house on fire as part of an elaborate plan to steal the older man's sterling silver and solid gold flutes.
  • Heavy Rain Washes Out Roads, Strands Families In Tonasket

    TONASKET, Wash. - Okanogan County's emergency manager says heavy rain has washed out two roads southeast of Tonasket, stranding four or five families who live there. Manager Scott Miller said Monday that county emergency management and public works employees were dispatched with heavy equipment to assess the damage and reopen the roads.

    UPDATE: House Fire On Spokane's South Hill

    SPOKANE, Wash. - Fire crews responded to a house fire at 50th & Crestline late Monday afternoon. Firefighters arrived with smoke and flames showing from the garage area. Fire crews on scene tell us the fire did spread to the attic of the home. No one was inside at the time of the fire however 2 cats and 2 dogs were located and removed unharmed.

    UPDATE: 4-Alarm Fire In Seattle; 1 Firefighter Injured

    SEATTLE, Wash. - Seattle firefighters have controlled a four-alarm blaze that tore through the former Sunny Jim peanut butter plant in south Seattle, injuring a firefighter and sending smoke high into the air. An estimated 120 firefighters responded Monday to the vacant, city-owned, two-story building. Fire officials say one firefighter was injured by a piece of falling siding. He was reported in stable condition Monday night at Harborview Medical Center.

    UPDATE: Steele's Wife Says Husband Is Innocent

    COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) - The wife of a Sandpoint-area lawyer says he is innocent of charges that he hired a hitman to kill her. Cyndi Steele said at a press conference Monday that her husband, Edgar Steele, loves her and did not hire a hitman.
