Gonzaga preparing for opening round

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs are expected to continue their highly successful season Thursday afternoon at the Rose Garden in Portland in their NCAA tournament opening-round game. The West Coast Conference powerhouse Zags (23-12) are favored by 12.5 points against Akron (23-12).

Thursday's game marks the Zags' 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

This is the Akron Zips first appearance at the big dance since 1986, when they came in as a 15th seed and lost in the first round against Michigan. 

The Zips are coached by Kieth Dambrot.  They come from a University of about 25,000 students The Zips, which is short for zippers, are named after a popular overshoe from the 20s and 30s.
