Two arrested in downtown Spokane fire

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police have arrested two people in connection with a Thursday morning structure fire in a vacant commercial building in downtown Spokane.

The arrests of a 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman within an hour of the fire starting.

Steven Sypher and Windy Garland have been charged with arson by Spokane Fire Department investigators.

Fire crews remained on scene after extinguishing the fire to check the building for occupants as a precaution. It is believed that at least seven people were taking shelter in the vacant building when the fire broke out.

Fire officials say one person was injured while running from the fire, but that person's injury was not significant enough to require hospitalization.

The man who reported the fire, Anthony Dorman, said the building is known for break-ins.

Dorman said right before he saw smoke, he heard windows break and called authorities.

The fire started just before 9 a.m. at 19 W. Pacific.

The building had previously been involved in a fire in 2006 which resulted in multiple injuries and the structure being boarded up and secured from access.
