File PhotoSPOKANE, Wash. - A 22-year-old Airway Heights man learned early Saturday that you can run from police in the dark, but you can't hide from the sheriff's helicopter.
A Spokane County Sheriff's deputy was on patrol about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and was eastbound on Sunset Ave. when he noticed a westbound car speeding toward him at about 80 miles per hour.
As the car passed him, the deputy illuminated the driver with his side alley lights.
When the deputy turned to pull the driver over, he saw that the car had sped up to about 100 miles per hour.
The deputy lost sight of it briefly when it turned onto Lewis, but found it abandoned and running in a driveway in the 1500 block.
The deputy talked to a woman in the home and she told him she was not familiar with the car. During the conversation, the deputy heard a window open at the rear of the house, ran around back and saw a man running into a nearby marsh.
The deputy identified himself and ordered the suspect to stop, but the man kept running until he could no longer be seen.
The sheriff's helicopter was called in and located the suspect using its Forward Looking Infra-red Radar.
The helicopter crew was able to instruct ground deputies to intercept the fleeing suspect. He was captured and identified as Jared Horton.
After being processed by Washington State Patrol, Horton was arrested for DUI, Obstructing a Police Investigation and Reckless Driving.
