SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police are investigating two 'smash and grab' burglaries after a North Newport Highway Chevron and North Division Cricket store were burglarized shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday.
At 3:40 a.m., police responded to an alarm the Chevron at 9420 N. Newport Highway to find a door had been pried open, a display case had been disturbed and items had been taken. Police say a white Chevrolet pick-up truck was seen on surveillance video.
Ten minutes later, police responded to the Cricket store at 7312 N. Division to find a truck inside the store.
A steel cable was hooked between the truck and an ATM inside the business. The ATM had been partially removed from the store before the suspect fled on foot after cracking the ATM and taking an unknown amount of cash.
Officers were able to track the burglary suspect to the area of Addison and Lyons, where it appears he stole a vehicle in order to leave the area.
Police say the truck left at the store is missing its VIN number, meaning it is possibly stolen.
The owners of the Cricket Wireless store say this is the second attempted robbery in as many days. They say Monday afternoon several other suspects tried to break into the store. The owner says the Cricket store will have to remain closed for the next two weeks for repairs and with Christmas just around the corner, he says this couldn't have happened at a worse time.
