Pentagon: Insurgents intercepted drone spy videos

Posted:

WASHINGTON. - When the unmanned aircraft known as Predator drones have sent back video feeds of potential targets, it hasn't just been the U.S. military that's been watching.

Pentagon officials confirm that insurgents in both Iraq and Afghanistan have hacked into the live video feeds, but the officials say there's no evidence they were able to jam the signals, or take control of the unmanned aircraft.

The Wall Street Journal reports Shiite fighters in Iraq used $26 off-the-shelf software programs to hack into drone video feeds.

Officials say they'll be trying to make sure the signals can't be intercepted from now on.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman says there are no plans to pull back on the military's use of drones. He says the drones, which are the military's eyes in the sky for surveillance and intelligence collection, are invaluable.

Whitman says there are potential vulnerabilities in all systems.

He says the military continually evaluates the technologies it uses and quickly corrects any vulnerabilities that are found.
