SPOKANE, Wash. - The basement of duplex in the 900 block of E. Rich was severely damaged by fire overnight Tuesday.
Fire crews responded to the duplex around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to find heavy smoke coming from one unit of the townhouse style duplex.
Once inside, crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and keep it from spreading.
People living in both units were in the process of moving out and at the time of the fire no one was in the unit where the fire broke out.
The unit in which the fire broke out will not be able to be lived in until major repairs are made, according to fire officials. In the basement, some of the floor joists were burnt away, weakening the structural support for that entire side of the duplex.
The other unit the duplex suffered smoke damage and is able to be occupied.
Fire investigators are still working to determine a cause for the fire.
