SQUAW BAY, Idaho - Members of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe refer to it as the S-word. But some 93 creeks, canyons, peaks and springs in Idaho that include the name squaw are not censored like that on any maps. And the tribe wants the word squaw removed.
They say it's a derogatory reference to a woman's genitals dating back to the area's frontier past. And they are petitioning the U-S Board on Geographic Names to change the names of squaw-places to titles that reflect womens' strength or the traditional use of the land.
But some politicians in Idaho vow to fight any changes, saying the names reflect the West's colorful history.
