SPOKANE, Wash. - A 6-month old baby previously on life support at Sacred Heart Hospital after being shaken has died. Police, who are now investigating the assault as a homicide, anticipate charging a 22-year old suspect with murder.
Around 7:30 Thursday night police were notified by Sacred Heart that a 6-month old baby girl had been transported from the West Wynn Motel on Sunset Park with suspicious injuries.
Doctors told responding officers that it looked like a case of child abuse. At that point major crimes detectives were called in to interview the baby's mother. She told police her boyfriend 22-year old Jereme Bassett called her at work around 3:30pm and said he had dropped the baby on the floor while drying her off after a bath. She also said an 8-year old girl lived at the home as well.
The mother said after Bassett told her he'd put the baby to sleep she was no longer worried. But when she got home at 5:00 she checked on the baby and found her limp and unresponsive. She immediately took the baby to the hospital.
Doctors said the girl's skull showed no sign of physical trauma, but it was apparent she'd sustained serious brain damage.
22-year old Jereme Bassett who has a previous criminal record was arrested early Friday morning and charged with First-Degree Assault and Domestic Violence.
He made his first court appearance Friday afternoon and remains at Spokane County Jail.
