8-year-old killed by intoxicated driver

LEWISTON, Idaho. - An 8-year-old girl was killed Monday after being struck by an intoxicated driver.

Police say they responded to the report of an injury collision in the 600 block of 3rd Avenue. When they arrived they found that Gregory Engel, 54, and Sydney Byrd, 8, had been struck by a vehicle that had already left the scene.

Byrd was taken to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center where she died of extensive head injuries. Engel, also taken to St. Joseph was treated and released.

Police were able to locate the suspect vehicle after they received a description. The driver, James Schuetze, 45, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and Driving While Suspended.

The Nez Perce County Prosecutor's Office and Lewiston Police Department have filed felony criminal charges against Schuetze. He has been charged with Murder in the 2nd Degree, Aggravated Battery and Leaving the Scene of an Injury Collision.
