Phelps talks about bong incident

NEW YORK, N.Y. - In his first network interview since being accused of smoking marijuana, Olympic champion Michael Phelps sat down with Today Show's Matt Lauer Friday and talked about what he calls a big mistake.

Phelps is known for being able to overcome anything, and anyone, in the pool.

The question lately has been can he overcome allegations he smoked pot at a party in South Carolina last fall.

On the Today Show, Phelps answered questions in his first network interview since the incident.

He called it simply a group of friends "celebrating"

"I mean, we all know what, you know, what you and I are talking about. It's a stupid mistake," said Phelps.

As for how he explains using the same excuse after a dui in 2004.

"I'll be the first one to admit i've made a lot of mistakes in my life," said Phelps.

To young fans who see Phelps as a role model he had this to say, "If you do make bad judgment make sure you're responsible that's how you're going to change and learn"

He seemed most eager to talk about what has not changed his desire to swim in another Olympics.

The most decorated Olympian in history hoping to leave this latest controversy in his wake.
