Many people know they should drink more water but are at a loss as to how much they should drink. The following tips are courtesy of Dr. John Berardi, Ph.D., one of the leading performance nutritionists in the world. 
  1. Sedentary people-should drink 2 liters or 8 cups per day
  2. Athletes- 3 liters or 12 cups per day
  3. Athletes in hot weather- 4 liters or 16 cups per day
 
Some people may have a problem reaching those quantities so here are a few tips to help you out:
  1. Drink cold water-it is more palatable, helps with mouth "feel" and ingestion
  2. Add lemon-increases desire to drink, kills bacteria
  3. Carry water jug-helps facilitate drinking adequately
