This month, Senior Life is under construction!  We are migrating over to an easier-to-use format that is less text-dense and offers a simpler, more user-friendly experience!  Keep checking in with us this month and watch for the changes!

The Academy Presents "Carry-Out Cuisine", Friday April 17th 2009 from 3-6pm.  Pick up a FREE meal for your family!  The Academy knows you're busy and that the last thing you want to do on a Friday night is cook.  So stop in and let them do the work for you!  You can take home a full meal of: fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, buttermilk biscuits & an Academy signature desert!  RSVP by April 13th to 509-484-4099 so reserve your dinner!  The Academy is a Merrill gardens Community.

Spring 2009 Quarter Classes for seniors through the Community Colleges of Spokane Institute for Extended Learning - registration is underway!  Seniors Program classes are offered throughout the Spokane area at senior centers, retirement housing, churches and other public locations.  Course offerings include computers, art, writers' workshops, history, humanities, foreign language, fitness and other general interest topics.  Class costs range from $9 to $62 for the quarter, including texts and materials in the computer classes.  For more information, call the Seniors Program Office at 533-4756.

Where can you turn for the resources you need and sound advice on how to protect you and your money?  AARP Washington presents "Taking Charge in Tough Times" in Spokane June 3, 2009 and in the Tri-Cities April 8, 2009.   Visit the Senior Life page and click on AARP Washington for more information on how you can be a part of this free event!

Is your family or your physician aware of your end-of-life preferences?  What if you can't communicate those wishes with them?  The Washington State Living Will Registry is a free, secure database that preserves Washington State residents' end-of-life preferences.  Read the full article here.

You may want to think twice before you have that steak or bologna sandwich...a study  by the U.S. National Cancer institute has found that diets high in red meat and processed meat shorten life span - not just from cancer and heart disease, but also Alzheimer's, stomach ulcers and an array of other conditions.   More on their findings are in this article
