OnStar exploring hands-free Twitter option for motorists

SPOKANE, Wash. - Do you really have to Twitter that badly?

You can follow KHQ on Twitter by clicking here.
That's the question many are asking now that OnStar has announced that it's adding Twitter update capabilities to its list of services.

Tech blogger Andru Edwards says he found out after OnStar sent him a survey with very specific descriptions on how a Twitter service would work through the vehicle-based communications company.

An OnStar employee confirmed that the service is coming to OnStar equipped vehicles, but declined to comment on further details.

Twitter is a Web-based social networking service that sends updates, or "tweets", to a home page from people that the page is asked to follow.

Edwards says OnStar told him the service is expected to use voice-to-text and text-to-voice recognition so the driver can listen and update their home pages without using their hands.

The Washington State Patrol says the service could be just another added distraction to driving.

"When you're driving down the road you need to think about driving, not about updating your twitter page," said WSP Sergeant Freddy Williams.

Williams says the service sounds like it would be legal and akin to talking on a Bluetooth headset.
