Man survives collision with train

GRANT COUNTY, Wash. - Police say a Quincy man narrowly escaped death after his car was struck by freight train near Ephrata.

Ramon Valles, 33, was driving on an access road about three miles southwest of Ephrata and apparently did not notice a train approaching at 50 mph on the tracks in his path.

Valles, driving a Chrysler Town and Country, continued over the tracks and was struck by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train. The cattle guard on the train pushed the vehicle into a ditch, which was later towed away.

Valles was wearing his seat belt and did not sustain any injury from the collision.  The engineer of the freight train was eventually able to stop the train one-mile from the collision site.

The sheriff's office encourages anyone who approaches an uncontrolled railroad crossing to be aware of their surroundings (day or night) and to remember, the train has the right-of-way (always).
