Driver arrested for DUI after getting stuck on train tracks

SPOKANE, Wash. - According to Washington State Patrol troopers, one man is very lucky to be alive. Troopers say the man very well could have been hit by a train after his vehicle became stuck on tracks early Wednesday morning.

It happened at 2nd and Sunset Boulevard Wednesdauy just before 1:30 a.m. Troopers say they were dispatched after the report of someone stuck on the railroad tracks. When they arrived on scene, troopers could see the driver still in the vehicle, trying to get off the tracks, wheels spinning and a train approaching.

Troopers say it could have ended for the driver right then and there, but, fortunately, as he had drove over the tracks, he'd come to rest on a railroad switch, which coordinates which trains go on which track. After he hit the Switch it shorted out and automatically stopped any approaching trains.

We asked a trooper on scene if he'd ever seen anything like this before, "This is a rare circumstance... right now we're just trying to investigate how the individual got on the track."

Initial reports show the driver probably ended up on the tracks after taking a wrong turn downtown by the depot.

The driver is a 22-year-old male who troopers lives on Fairchild Airforce Base. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Troopers stress that this situation could have been much, much worse.

(AP) - A 9-year-old boy died in an all-terrain vehicle crash on a rural road north of Boulder over the weekend.   The Montana Highway Patrol says the ATV went off Sloans Lane early Sunday afternoon and tipped onto its side. The boy was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.   His name has not been released.
