Daye declares for NBA draft: 'Basically, I want to test the waters'

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga sophomore forward Austin Daye will submit his name for the NBA draft, but will not hire an agent, he announced Wednesday afternoon.

By declaring himself eligible for the draft, but not hiring an agent, Daye leaves open the possibility of returning to Gonzaga for his junior season.  As a sophomore, Daye averaged almost 13 points per game and led the team in rebounds.

"Basically I want to test the waters to see what my future might entail," said Daye through a news release issued by Gonzaga.  "I definitely had to sit down and talk to my family about my decision.  If a great opportunity presents itself I might have to lead that path.  A lot depends on these workouts.

Daye will return to California after school lets out in May to work out with a personal trainer before he performs for potentially interested NBA teams.

Daye's father, Darren, a former NBA player, supports his son's decision.

"My dad told me this is my decision and to make a good choice that will benefit me the most," said Daye.  "He told me it's important for our family to know it's my decision."

Coaches at Gonzaga have been supportive of the decision, Daye said.  Coach Mark Few, who say guard Jeremy Pargo go through the same process last year wished Daye well.

"Obviously, we'd like to see Austin in a Gonzaga uniform next year," said Few.  "He's a great individual and someone we enjoy having in our program.  I don't begrudge anyone taking a look at their future.  I'm confident when the time comes Austin will make an informed, educated decision about what is best for his immediate basketball future."

The deadline for underclassmen submitting their paperwork to the NBA to declare their intentions to enter the draft is June 26.  Daye has until June 16 to withdraw his name and retain his rights to return to Gonzaga.
