Simulated lockdown at University High School

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - The culmination of a year-long planning process to step up emergency preparedness at University High School took place Thursday morning in the form of a full-scale lockdown drill. The drill included the school's 1,650 students, 100 staff members and emergency responders including police and firefighters.

The Central Valley School District said that the drill featured emergency personnel responding to reports of an unauthorized intruder in a realistic manner simulating an actual event. The simulated intruder would disrupt classes and as the drill progresses the school will go into lockdown. Law enforcement would then become involved in the simulation to show how an actual event would take place.

University High School principal Daryl Hart said, "Although this event is simulated, all students, staff and parents are strongly encouraged to take it seriously." The school district also wanted to spread word to the public that even though the event would be extremely realistic it was in fact a simulation.

School district officials said they anticipated the lockdown would last approximately 30 minutes and that the entire drill would be over by about 10 a.m.

The drill is part of a year-long project to enhance school security and emergency planning paid for with a $70,000 Comprehensive Safe Schools Grant for University High School. The school district says that the grant money has also paid for radios, cameras and other emergency supplies for classrooms.
