Wash. treasury to see further revenue decrease

Posted: Updated:

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington's treasury is expected to take a $482 million hit through 2011.

The state Economic and Revenue Forecast Council received the update Thursday by chief economist Arun Raha.

Revenue for the current budget period that ends this year is projected to decrease $185 million, and the decrease for the next budget period that ends in 2011 is projected to decrease an additional $297 million.

Raha says economic recovery could begin later this year.

The recession has already hammered state revenue, and lawmakers had to bridge a roughly $9 billion budget deficit earlier this year.

To deal with the reduced revenue that was projected Thursday, Gov. Chris Gregoire is directing agencies to further cut spending Levels.

3 Washington projects on stimulus pork list

Three projects in Washington are listed by Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn as examples of wasted federal stimulus money.

He has a list of 100 projects he considers pork instead of progress.

They include $11 million to help build a Highway 520 overpass in Redmond to connect parts of the Microsoft campus, $148,000 for Washington State University-Vancouver to study the use of marijuana with medications like morphine, and $18 million from the Bureau of Reclamation to help the state grow fish.
