SPOKANE, Wash. - They built the tournament. And now more teams than ever have decided to compete in this year's Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Senior Legion Wood Bat Classic.
The tournament this year was expanded to 24 teams, some coming from as far away as Alaska to British Columbia. It starts on July 2 and runs through July 5, with the championship game at Gonzaga's Patterson Baseball complex.
First round games are July 2 at AK Jackson, Whitworth University, Hart Field, as well as McEuen Field and Lake City in Coeur d'Alene. The semi-finals are scheduled to take place at Whitworth at AK Jackson Field.
Some of the featured teams in the tournament this year include the Billings Scarlets, the defending Montana Legion Champions; the Twin City Titans from Richland, the defending Washington Legion champions and national runners-up; The Chugiak Mustangs from Eagle River, Alaska, the Alaska Region Champions; and the Spokane Blue Devils. The Blue Devils are the current leaders in the Spokane Legion League.
Some new entries include a team from Crescent City, Calif., as well as teams from Idaho, Montana Washington and Canada.Former American Legion baseball player, Iraq War veteran and current Washington State 4th District State Representative Matt Shea will throw out the first pitch at the championship game on July 5 at 1:30 p.m.
